From Dehua in Fujian Province, of moulded octagonal tapered form, later decorated in Holland c.1720 in purple, blue, turquoise, iron red and gilding in the Kakiemon style with a seated crane, a flying phoenix, flowering plants, insects and brocade patterns. the foot with lightly incised triangular work, above the straight short foot. impressed seal mark.

Literature
Several octagonal beakers with Dutch enamelling, inspired by Japanese porcelain, were exhibited at the British Museum's Oriental Ceramics Society East Meets West seminar, figs. 10, 30 and 42. Beakers of this type are sometimes referred to as being decorated by the `Pink Crane Painter`.
Our beaker includes a panel of red diaper pattern. Similar patterns occur on other pieces by the so-called 'Pink Crane Painter'; see Susan Miller, Europe's Enamellers: Creating China for the West, OCS Transactions, 2000-1, p. 154.

'I have found five Japanese bottles by the 'Pink Crane Painter', three of which incorporate the diaper: two round bottles, one in the Rijksmuseum,BK-1968-221, one in the British Museum, F 4854; and a square bottle in Augustus the Strong's collection in Dresden, PO 1186 (purchased May 24, 1727). Two other bottles by the 'Pink Crane Painter': a square bottle in the Rijksmuseurn, BK-1968-21548, and one in a private collection. I thank Helen Espir for sharing her research and photos with me from her visits to the Zwinger Gallery, Dresden.'
