Of tapering cylindrical form slightly flaring towards the foot, the lower body ribbed with 'C' shaped handle and with the rare addition of flat covers, the body with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels decorated with flowering trees and floral sprays, further highlighted in gold, the rim washed in a brown glaze, the base unglazed.

Provenance

The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall

Literature

This design with tapering cylindrical body and ribbing around the body was probably taken from an English Charles 11 (1635-1685 )silver tankard prototype. Lidded porcelain tankards like these are rare and probably made as part of a private order.
