Heavily potted with a shallow bowl and everted rim, finely painted in underglaze blue, shades of overglaze green, iron-red, yellow, aubergine and gilding, with a decoration to the centre of the bowl of a cockerel and hen, the cockerel meticulously detailed showing his multi-coloured feathered breast, the dark blue and green wings, each feather delineated, his long tail and his iron red neck, the comb and wattle painted with tiny red dots, the hen similarly finely detailed with a light yellow breast, multi-coloured wings and a smaller comb and wattle again painted with tiny red dots, all set inside double circular lines in blue and a band of stylised wave-pattern below a decoration of iron-red and blue carps swimming amongst aquatic plants around the interior sides of the bowl, the flattened rim with six small cartouches each reserved with a single flower-spray on a ground of budding and blossoming lotus and scrolling leaves, the exterior sides boldly painted with large dark-blue lotus and scrolling leaves, a blue detailed band around the short foot-ring, the glazed base painted with double circular lines.

Footnote: There is an almost identical bowl dated to the Genroku period, (1688-1704) in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (NGV), purchased with funds donated by Pauline Gandel in 2018, museum number 2018.578 (click here to view). A full page illustration can be found on page 12 of the NGV Foundation's Annual Report, 2017-18.
